Out with the hard and in with the soft.
Scale builds up in pipes, boilers, washing machines and dishwashers. Just 1.6mm of scale build-up in heating systems causes a 12% loss in heating efficiency, adding hundreds of pounds to heating bills. Scale also reduces the life of this equipment. Softened water stops scale build-up and can remove existing scale deposits in hot water systems as well as scale around taps, in shower heads and stains on baths and showers.

Understanding Water Softeners
What you need to know when choosing a Water Softener
NUMBER OF BATHROOMS
How many bathrooms in the property is a good indication of the water used at any one point (peak flow rate). A water softener needs to have the capacity to cope with all bathrooms being used at the same time.
LOCATION OF MAINS INCOMING WATER
A water softener is most commonly installed where the mains water supply enters the property. For the majority of properties in the UK, this will be under the kitchen sink. Other common entry points are under the hallway stairs, basement or utility room.
WATER HARDNESS IN YOUR AREA
The hardness of your water –
the amount of calcium and magnesium carbonate present in your water –
will vary depending on where you
live in the UK.

Water Softeners:
A Buyer’s Guide
Water Softeners
A non-electric water softener doesn’t use a timer to regenerate or clean itself. Instead, a non-electric water softener uses a mechanical water meter to measure water usage. The system calculates how much water can be softened before it needs to regenerate, so it regenerates on-demand, when needed.
Water Softeners
Electric water softener systems use an electric timer to determine when to regenerate the resin bed inside the single tank. They are programmed so that at a set time every day, usually in the early hours of the morning, the timer activates the regeneration process by flushing the resin bed with the brine solution.
